Introduction to Paint Protection Film (PPF)
For car enthusiasts, maintaining a flawless paint job is a constant battle. Scratches, chips, and fading from sun exposure can take a toll on your car’s appearance and value. Enter Paint Protection Film (PPF), an innovative solution that acts as an invisible shield, safeguarding your car’s finish. This guide explores everything you need to know about PPF, from choosing the right film to installation considerations.
What is Paint Protection Film (PPF)?
Simply put, paint protection film, commonly called PPF, is a clear urethane layer that is applied to the top coat of your Tesla’s paint, effectively forming an invisible barrier between it and the environment.
Once in place, the film bonds with the clear coat of the car’s factory paint and creates another layer of protection. Modern paint protection films are thick enough to provide amazing protection yet thin enough to be inconspicuous and wrap around all edges.
(For example, the XPEL PPF we use at Tint Haus is only 215 microns (0.215 mm.)
This enables it to be 100% transparent to the eye. And since it is still 3 times thicker than your car’s clear top coat, it adds colour depth and is still thick enough to allow “self-healing” – see benefits below.
Other Names for Paint Protection Film
Paint protection film is most often called PPF, but is also referred to as PPF Wrap and Clear Bra. Whatever you call it (we personally prefer PPF), what matters most is the quality of the film, the care taken to install it and the installation environment.
What Paint Protection Film Isn’t
Paint protection film is not the same as vinyl wrap. Vinyl is the same material that is used to put advertising vehicle wraps on commercial vehicles. It provides a degree of protection but it is thick and coloured – meaning it is not able to showcase your existing paint work or provide a subtle gloss adjustment.
3 Key Factors for Choosing Paint Protection Film
There are several factors to consider when selecting the perfect PPF for your car:
- Protection Level: PPF comes in various thicknesses, offering different levels of scratch and chip resistance. Consider your needs and driving habits. For high-impact areas like the front bumper, a thicker film is usually best.
- Self-Healing Properties: Some advanced PPF films, such as XPEL Ultimate Fusion have the ability to self-heal minor scratches with moderate heat application. This can be a valuable feature for maintaining a flawless finish.
- Hydrophobic Properties: The best PPF films are hydrophobic, repelling water and making cleaning easier. This can be particularly beneficial in areas with frequent rain or road grime.
Paint Protection Film Brands and Options
The world of PPF offers a variety of brands and film options. Here’s a breakdown:
Paint Protection Film Types:
- Gloss PPF: The timeless champion, this crystal-clear film amplifies your car’s original paintwork, showcasing its depth and colour with showroom-like brilliance. Imagine the radiant shine, now amplified!
- Satin PPF: Make a bold statement with the velvety smoothness and non-reflective finish of satin PPF. It masks minor imperfections and exudes a modern, stealthy vibe, perfectly complementing darker paint colours.
Notable Paint Protection Film Brands:
Several reputable brands lead the PPF market. Doing your research and considering installer recommendations is crucial. Some well-known brands include:
- XPEL
- 3M Scotchgard Paint Protection Film
- Llumar Paint Protection Film
- Stek Dyno
Recommended PPF Options

We recommend:
XPEL Ultimate Fusion PPF
This is the Industry Standard go-to for car paint protection. XPEL Ultimate Fusion PPF is virtually invisible and provides protection from everyday damages including scuffs, scratches, chips and more. Heat-applied self-healing, non-yellowing and discoloration & stain resistant, XPEL PPF protects your ride for years to come.
XPEL Stealth Satin PPF
Ad XPEL Stealth Satin PPF and transform your gloss finish to a stunning satin or frozen look. This is an excellent option for those looking to add individuality to their mass-market vehicle.
Specifically formulated for preserving a flat factory finish.
This revolutionary film combines self-healing properties with a virtually invisible matte/satin finish, offering ultimate protection without compromising your car’s original colour. Ideal for those seeking discreet yet comprehensive shielding.
Don’t Forget Your Windshield:
While PPF is typically used for painted surfaces, consider extending its protection to your windshield.
This is particularly beneficial when:
- Your Vehicle Has High Replacement Costs: Modern windshields, especially those with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) cameras and sensors, can be very expensive to replace. PPF acts as a sacrificial layer, absorbing impacts that would otherwise damage the windshield, saving you a significant expense.
- You Drive in a Damage-Prone Environment: If your driving environment involves frequent exposure to:
- Gravel roads: Loose stones can easily chip or crack your windshield.
- Trucks and construction vehicles: Falling debris from these large vehicles poses a risk to your windshield.
- Harsh weather conditions: Sand, hail, and other airborne debris can cause windshield damage.
By applying PPF to your windshield, you gain a virtually invisible shield that significantly reduces the risk of stone chips and cracks. This translates to peace of mind on the road and potentially saves you money on costly windshield replacements.
We recommend and install STEK Dynoflex Windshield PPF.
DIY vs. Professional PPF Installation
While DIY PPF kits exist, professional installation is highly recommended. PPF application requires skill and experience to achieve a flawless, bubble-free finish. Professionals use specialised tools and have the expertise to handle complex curves and contours of your car.
